RE: Call for Award Applications

Region VI is now accepting applications/nominations for travel awards for the 2010 spring regional meeting and the NCURA 2010 FRA meeting.

Region VI is also accepting nominations for its recognition awards.

Travel Awards:

Region VI will be supporting up to four (4) travel awards of $500 to offset the cost of attendance at the Region VI/VII spring meeting, April 18 - 21, 2010 in Newport Beach California.

Region VI will also be supporting up to two (2) travel awards of $500 to offset the cost of attendance at the NCURA 2010 Financial Research Administrators (FRA) Conference, March 3-5, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas.

Applications for travel awards to both meetings are now being accepted. The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, December 18, 2009.

Please note that applicants do not have to be members of NCURA at the time of nomination, and that individuals may nominate themselves for the awards.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Nominees must be research administrators from the Region VI geographic area (AK, CA, HI, NV, OR, and WA).

2. Nominees must not have previously attended an NCURA-sponsored meeting or conference (training courses or web seminar attendance is acceptable).

3. Nominees must demonstrate both the potential benefit of the award, and the individual or institutional need for travel assistance.

4. The travel awards provide recipients with up to $500 to cover travel, hotel and meals, and/or registration costs associated with meeting attendance. At the time of application, applicants should have secured their manager or supervisor's approval to attend the meeting. Either the awardees or their home institutions must agree to cover any meeting costs in excess of the $500 award.

How to Apply:

Nominations must be completed via the online NCURA Region VI application form (see: http://www.ogrd.wsu.edu/r6ncura/TRA.aspx ) and must be accompanied by at least one letter of support. The letter of support must be provided by someone at the nominee's institution. Ideally it should be written by a supervisor or someone who can authorize meeting attendance. The letter should be uploaded into the online application form along with the nominee's statement of interest.

Selection Considerations:

Selection of the awardees will be determined by the Regional Award Committee, based on perceived need and potential benefit to the nominee and the nominee's institution. The Committee's decisions will be final. Selection criteria used by the Committee include:

* Benefit of attendance

* Candidate's contribution to his/her organization, and ability to add value to organization if able to attend the meeting

* Relevant experience of the candidate

* Strength and applicability of support letter(s)

* Reasons why the applicant's institution could not support the applicant's attendance (in the absence of a travel award) at the meeting.

Travel Awards will be announced by January 22, 2010 to permit awardees sufficient time to register, and make hotel and travel arrangements.

Recognition Awards:

Region VI also has a Recognition Award Program. The Helen Carrier Distinguished Service Award, the Barry Dorfman Outstanding Region VI Member Award, and the Award for Meritorious Contributions are designed to recognize special service and noteworthy contributions. In accordance with program guidelines nominations may be made at any time up to 120 days prior to that meeting. Recipients of these awards will be recognized at the spring regional meeting. The deadline for these nominations is also December 18, 2009.

The Helen Carrier Distinguished Service Award and the Barry Dorfman Outstanding Region VI Member Award are for individuals, whereas either individuals or groups can be nominated for the Meritorious Contribution Award. Individuals may nominate themselves or others for any of the recognition awards.

Nominations for the recognition awards must be completed via the on-line NCURA Region VI nomination form. Applications or nominations should be accompanied by endorsements as specified in the criteria for each of the awards. Letters can be uploaded on-line.
